My grandson asked, "Papa, how come your trailer only sleeps 4?"
I replied, "Because I couldn't find one that only sleeps 2."

NY Adirondacks

If your're into Fall leaf peeping, now is the time to hit the Adirondack Mtns. in Upstate NY. We just returned from a 2-week stay in Lake Plaid & the drive home was beautiful even in the rain. We had 2 weeks of great weather where in Saranac Lake, in that time period they experienced a record low of 25 & a week later a record high of 75. A great drive to take is from the NYS thruway at Amsterdam, exit 27, north on rte. 30, to Tupper Lake, & rte 3 to Saranac Lake. The drive passes thru Indian L., Long L., & Blue Mtn.L. The foliage is fantastic & the roads are in great shape. Hope you can enjoy this as much as we did.
Happy Trails.

RE: The last game in Yankee Stadium tonight.........

I hope the Red Sox & Cubs don't get greedy & move from their classic old parks. It's great to watch baseball away from parks with nooks and crannies that affect the flight of the ball. Watching a ball in Wrigley get stuck in the ivy or a homer in any other ballpark being held to a single off the Green Monster is unique & exciting. The new ball parks are boring with their uniformity, but the new luxury boxes generate big bucks used to buy more A-Rods.

RE: "Who's Going to Alaska in 2009?"

It all depends on your time frame. If you have the time, solo is the way to go because of the freedom of schedule. This year we had the time so we left in late May and returned to NY Sept. 1st. We spent one month traveling to AK, one month in AK, and one month returning. If we liked a location we stayed longer. We watched caravan members & thought in some cases it looked like organized mayhem, but maybe I'm wrong. What ever way you choose, I wish you well.
Happy Trails

RE: What is up with US Customs?

We never complain about border delays because they are protecting our loved ones. On our trip to Alaska this summer we had numerous crossings without complaints & most agents were cheerful & courteous, with a sense of humor, like wanting to know if Emily our cat was a US citizen. If you want a good crossing, travel from Stuart, BC to Hyder, AK; there is no US Customs (Nowhere to go!). We hope your future crossings are pleasant.

Securing Chairs

We have 2 free standing swivel/rocker chairs at the rear of our Sunnybrook 5er. Up to our rough trip to Alaska we had no problems until one tipped and damaged window blinds on a bumpy road. We now travel with the chairs lying on the floor. Is there any way to secure these chairs in an upright/fixed position? They sit on a carpeted floor. Thanks.

RE: living in rv in winter - buffalo

In Albany, as in Buffalo I think I could find a nice furnished apartment for the price you're going to spend for your idea.
Also consider the high probability of power failures from those frequent Upstate ice storms. Just a thought, good luck with your choice.

RE: Foreign Visitors to the US Parks

On our 3 month Alaskan trip this summer we encountered many foreigners, which has to be good for our economy. In the Grand Canyon we did 3 sunrise/sunsets and felt like we were in the minority. The only person we overheard/understood had a Scottish accent. Since I'm foreign born, I can appreciate help with our language & customs, so I try to help everyone that seems confused. I helped one couple trying to figure out gas pump payment with their credit card. Every bit helps to promote our great country.
Most of our contacts were positive, the only problem we had it seems were with a few Orientals who were rude. One gentleman with a camera pushed his way against my DW & when I told him to back off he just looked at me & did not move. I switched places with DW, called him an AH & avoided an incident. It seems that their cameras are their eyes to the world.

XM Radio

I should have known better!
I have XM radio as part of my Chevy Silverado package & signed up to cover our 3 month Alaska journey. Everything was fine in the lower 48 and spotty in Washington & Oregon hills. In BC, Alberta, YT & Alaska it was erratic or in AK almost non-existent. It dawned on me that the sattelite is probably equatorial & the transmit angle excessive. The antenna on the truck is rather limited, so maybe a longer, higher gain antenna would have helped.
I just want to warn you good people of the problem.

RE: generator etiquette

You are going above and beyond what most campers do. Besides observing quiet hours & gen. run hours, I try to place my Honda away from my neighbors. It's amazing the difference a few feet of seperation can yield in noise mitigation.

RE: I-71N Thru Cleveland to I-90

I am originally from Erie, Pa. and have travelled that way often. I-71 to I-271 to I-90 east is by far the best way. I-71 to I-90 east takes you right thru mid-town Cleveland, and that is a mess. Also, I-271 has an express lane straight to I-90. It is faster, less congested and and easier navigated. You will thank me in the morning.
I will thank you right now!!!
Thanks everyone for your fast responses.

RE: I-71N Thru Cleveland to I-90

We took I-71N from Columbus to I-90 enroute to Erie today - we Took I-271 and didn't go anywhere near Cleveland. So, I really don't understand the question.
The Streets & Routes cd I have suggests I-71 direct to I-90, that's why I asked.

Gallup, NM to Albany, NY

We are now on Hwy.40 in Gallup,NM and heading home to Albany,NY towing a 28' 5er & hoping to arrive by 9/1. Our plan is rte. 40 to Okla. City, rte. 44 to St. Louis, rte. 70 to Indianapolis then ?
How is rte 44 for travel? We plan on 250-300 miles per day & would like at least elec. hookup because of the heat. The early route is not written in stone!
Would like suggestions on CGs with some peaceful attractions along the way. We've been on the road since late May & need some limited R&R along the way. Thanks.

Allison Tranny Heat/Noise

Have an 07 2500 D/A Silverado HD Classic pulling a 10K 5er. Today in California the temp got up to 103 degrees on rte 20 over hills to Williams. The tranny temp nudged past 200 and the tranny was whining and moaning intermittently uphill which I never heard in 20K miles. Most of my towing has been in relatively cool temps.
Checked the dip stick per instructions cold and hot. Cold was in the zone but hot was just at the lower limit, which according to the manual is 1 qt. down. I doubt this would cause the problem & intend to add oil.
Anyone have experience with this? I'm in Cal. heading for NY with probably some serious climbs so should I have a dealer check it out?
